Poets’ Biographies

Jim Johnstone

Jim Johnstone is a Toronto-based writer and physiologist. He's the author of three books of poetry: Sunday, the locusts (Tightrope Books, 2011), Patternicity (Nightwood Editions, 2010) and The Velocity of Escape (Guernica Editions, 2008) and the winner of a CBC Literary Award, The Fiddlehead's Ralph Gustafson Poetry Prize, Matrix Magazine's 2011 LitPop Award and This Magazine's 2010 Great Canadian Literary Hunt.

Julie Roorda

Julie Roorda is the author of three volumes of poetry, most recently Floating Bodies (2010), all published by Guernica Editions. She has also published a collection of short stories entitled Naked in the Sanctuary (Guernica, 2010) and Wings of a Bee (Sumach, 2007), a novel for young adults. She works full-time as a freelance writer and editor.

Ruth Roach Pierson

Professor emerita of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto and author of numerous academic studies, Ruth Roach Pierson has published two volumes of poetry with BuschekBooks of Ottawa: Where No Window Was (2002) and Aide-Mémoire (2007), which was named a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry in 2008. Her third poetry collection, Contrary, was launched in 2011 by Tightrope Books of Toronto. With Sue MacLeod, she is currently at work on an anthology of movie poems entitled I Found It at the Movies to be published by Tightrope Books in spring 2013.

Larry Sulky

Larry Sulky is a poet, songwriter, musician, linguist, and somewhat reluctant publishing industry technocrat. One of his earliest poems won a prize and was published online (in the 2007 Toronto Art Bar contest), and he has continued to pursue lyricometric success ever since. He has provided music/soundscapes for several of Elaine Whittaker's prior installations. He is a dual American/Canadian citizen and resides in Toronto.
